Role of the Sacristan
The sacristan is to support the Priest, Deacon, and the other liturgical ministers by arranging "the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things that are necessary for the celebration of Mass" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 105). Sacristans must be responsible, mature, attentive to detail, very organized, and reliable. An important part of this job is ensuring reverence for the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, most especially through proper care of the sacred vessels and altar linens.
The sacristan arrives early before the liturgy to prepare all that is needed for Mass, often in coordination with the master of ceremonies. After Mass, the sacristan ensures proper care and cleaning of used linens and sacred vessels in accord with the norms and liturgical principles of the Church.
To carry out these duties, the sacristan needs to have a strong working knowledge of the liturgical books used for the celebration of Mass and the liturgical calendar, as well as a personal prayer life nourished by Eucharistic piety.
